Caete Scope is a Work In Progress (W.I.P.) installation motivated by the feedback that the videogame Colateral Vertigo received by_Maite Cajaraville,_Gisle Frøysland and the general public in Piksel Festival 2024 edition. It’s also inspired by the audiovisual performances by various artists and live coding that seems to be at the Piksel’s core culture.
The challenge is to make something interactive in 3D that works only with the trackpad, so it would make it easier to port the work for tablets or VR operating with Linux systems later on.
The game engine of choice is UPBGE (upbge.org) which is Libre and Open Source. UPBGE is a fork of Blender 3D (blender.org) with a game engine on it.
“Caeté” is a word from Tupi Guarani language for a specific kind of rainforest in Brazil. The sounds from Caete_Scope were recorded by artists from Freesound.org. Those sounds are mostly from Caeté´s fauna and flora.
While Colateral Vertigo was inspired by my interactions with children as a 3D instructor Caete Scope is a work in progress inspired by adults.
System required: Ubuntu Linux 24.04 and in a computer with a discrete graphics card with at least 4GB of VRAM.

Instructions
To start the binary double click it with the trackpad.
This will bring you a 3D environment where the camera is in a fixed location and there are some ways to move things around by making them come closer or go far. You can use the trackpad and trackpad’s buttons to interact.
These will change the volume of sounds attached to objects. The sounds are set very low in the software binary, so it doesn’t bug a person that is constantly around in the exhibit.
Esc key finishes the software.
